President Bush Shoe Thrower Gets a Taste of His Own Medicine: Watch Video Footage
The Iraqi TV correspondent, Muntader al-Zaidi, who famously threw his shoes at US President George W Bush has found himself on the receiving end of a copy cat shoe throwing incident whilst giving a press conference in Paris according to the BBC.
Muntader al-Zaidi threw his shoes at President Bush back in December 2008 in Baghdad, whilst President Bush was speaking at a press conference. Zaidi threw his shoes to protest the killing of Iraqis during the Iraq war. He was convicted of assault and spent nine months in prison in Baghdad. He was released in September 2009 when he claimed he had been tortured whilst in jail.
Zaidi was speaking at a news conference in Paris about his claims when the latest shoe throwing incident happened. He told the journalists he was receiving medical treatment for his injuries after suffering beatings, whippings, and electric shocks. Many Iraqis hail Zaidi as a hero for throwing his shoes at President Bush and he has reportedly received offers of gifts, money and marriage from across the Arab world. This view however, was obviously not taken by, at least, one man present at the Paris press conference, who saw fit to protest at the shoe thrower, by throwing his shoes at him.
Whether it was a serious protest or an act by some maverick with a sense of humour unable to stop himself, won’t be clear until the, as yet, unidentified man is questioned. As with the original shoe throwing incident, whilst the shoes were well aimed, they missed their target by inches thanks to a little evasive action.
The whole thing seems somewhat farcical and it is very hard, if not impossible to have any sympathy for Zaidi, who to all intents and purposes, asked for what he got, by way of his own actions. Indeed Zaidi himself appears to have seen the funny side of the incident. After the shoe thrower had been chased out of the press conference by Zaidi’s brother throwing his shoes at the assailant, Zaidi quipped “He’s stolen my trick!”
It is thought that the man who threw his shoes at Muntader al-Zaidi is unlikely to be sentenced to nine months in prison. It is also thought to be highly unlikely that there is any truth to the rumours that the Paris shoe thrower was a heavily disguised man by the name of Bush.

I’mAlex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http High-quality systems used in video conferencing are called telepresence systems. The images are life-size yet not truly lifelike. They lack the depth that people would normally see if they were in the same room together. But this could change in the future with new kinds of three-dimensional telepresence systems. Last week, we told you about a 3-D system at the University of Arizona. Researchers can send a moving image over the Internet and show it on a special screen in close to real time. People would not have to wear special glasses like they often need to watch 3-D movies. The system uses a lot of cameras to take pictures of a person from different positions. Lasers reproduce the pictures combined into three-dimensional images, or holograms. The image appears more realistic with the more cameras that are used and the more pictures that are taken. Howard Lichtman is president of the Human Productivity Lab. His company advises other companies on buying and using telepresence systems. Mr. Lichtman also publishes Telepresence Options, which reports on the industry. He says this latest development would have done wonders for the “Star Wars” movie with the famous “Princess Leia” hologram scene. The researchers in Arizona say their 3-D system is still years away from completion. Even then, Howard Lichtman says it may have trouble competing with systems already on the market …
